Status of Protection Efforts
Despite the best efforts of members of Friends of Arana Gulch, the Broadway-Brommer Bike Road continues to raise its ugly head in Santa Cruz City Council meetings.
October 14, 2003, the Santa Cruz City Council held "a public meeting to consider use options to guide the preparation of Park Master Plan for Arana Gulch (a 67.7-acre City-owned property)".
The City proposed:
- Open Space resource enhancement and protection (including Santa Cruz tarplant, riparian and wetland, and other habitat areas)
- A trail system that includes the proposed Broadway-Brommer Bicycle/Pedestrian Path connection (Alternative D2 including bridge crossings across Hagemann Gulch and Arana Creek)
- Interpretive displays and overlook areas
Public participation in this "public meeting" was limited to two minutes, while City staff and City Council members and staff had unlimited time to present their information.
