I carry a crutch if I ride my bicycle so, that if I get a flat tire, I'm not screwed. For other things, I mostly use my walker. I speak slowly and need a major operation on my left shoulder to correct the pain in my left arm.. I saw an orthopedic surgeon on 8/24/09. He said I need a total joint replacement and he can schedule it. Hey, I can still ride my recumbent bicycle.

I am thankful I was able to help my Mom; taking her driving, buying her gifts, doing her taxes, taking her to movies, to dinner - looking after her. Once we went to the Torii, a restaurant in Modesto, for Mom's birthday. The chef came out and started clashing his knives together, warming up for our Japanese dinner. Mom put her hands over her ears and started saying it was too loud. The chef got really embarassed. I was not surprised, but had to reassure him that he had done nothing wrong.

One Christmas I took her to Royal Robbins in Modesto. Mom decided what clothing; sweaters, pants, etc., she wanted to wear, tried everything on and I paid for them. She was so happy with her reindeer print sweater, she proudly wore it in the truck and back at Villa Del Rey, at dinner.

My white Toyota pickup truck performed well. I put about 18,000 miles/year on it for about 10 years taking Mom driving and going to see her. It had about 265,000 miles on it when I finally replaced it with a newer silver Toyota Tacoma. The Tacoma has electric windows (cool stuff) and electric door locks (very cool stuff).

Toyota trucks rock!
This is my kitty, Uma. She is not named after Uma Thurman. Uma got her name from the fact that she's too small
to be a puma, so she's an Uma.Uma used to leave me presents of field mice she had deanimated. She would leave me the occaisonal rat too, but never any birds. I think they were too tasty. Uma was diagnosed FIV positive in February, 2007. She'd been losing weight for a couple months, putting it back on and then not eating again. Saturday, May 19, 2007 in the morning. Uma was crouched on my carpet and it struck me how miserable she looked. I called up the vet immediately and took her in to be put down. It was the hardest thing I have ever done. Uma was the sweetest kitty I have ever known. At the end my sweetie weighed less then five pounds.

To the right is my friend, Ray. I knew him for 34 years. He was killed May 15, 2006 while hiking with his wife by Lake Arrowhead on the Pacific Crest Trail. He slipped and fell 200 feet . . . The hospitality that he and Alice showed me, kept me going when things with Mom were really bleak.

I am getting pretty enthused about Chemistry again. I took a really fascinating physics class, last semester. The last third was devoted to quantum (atomic size particles). It makes me wonder how these guys were ever able to figure out stuff at that level of size, it is so tiny it seems the background noise from other objects would overwhelm data from their object of interest. I think I understand the 'Bohr radius' and what it relate to - wavelength of an electron.

Does the Bohr radius mean the the charge of a proton is in the center of a probability cloud one Bohr radius from center to edge? The electron, can not approach closer then the Bohr radius without collapsing its wave funtion. Which leads to the question: Is the wave-function dependent on gravity? what happens when it collapses?*

*If I were a king, I would know these things.#

#Monty Python and the Holy Grail

When I was working the desk in the Computer Technology Center where people came to pickup and pay for their printouts, a man comes up in an electric wheelchair and asked to use the phone. I handed it over to him. His hands started shaking so badly, he dropped the phone. A student picks it up and hands it to me. I mentioned that I would make the phonecall for him and did so. While waiting for his ride, I did not try to pretend the stuff with dropping the phone had not happened. Rather, I said that it happens, you are doing the best you can and stuff like that happens. It's embarrassing, I've been there, I felt totally embarrassed, and it happens. So don't worry about it. Here's your ride . . .

I have yet to meet the person who enjoys being disabled. I would love to get a job that pays me a living wage.

If I continue on my path to an advanced degree in chemistry, a job will not be a problem and I will learn some really excellent things along the way. However, Disabled services for students are so abysmally bad - its not real likely.
