Tap-Dancing

John and Ray had been buddies for many years. They read the same books, watched similar movies and delighted in the same off-beat humor.

Some background:

John's and Ray's favorite book was, "Breakfast of Champions," by Kurt Vonnegut. In the book, Vonnegut's science fiction writer, Kilgore Trout, creates a science fiction short story, "The Dancing Fool," about a tragic failure to communicate.

"The Dancing Fool," concerns a flying saucer creature, named Zog, who comes from the the other side of our galaxy with the knowledge of how to stop wars and end starvation. Zog brings this information from the planet, Margo, where the beings communicate by farting and tap-dancing.

Zog lands at night near a farmhouse in New Jersey. The structure is ablaze. He rushes into the farmhouse, farting and tap-dancing, warning the inhabitents of their terrible danger.

The head of the family beans Zog with a golf club.

The incident:

John is at Ray's house Monday morning at 6:30 AM. Ray and his wife are in the kitchen making lunch, breakfast and coffee. A**** cuts a tremendous fart as she moves around the kitchen.

After a few moments John says to her, "A****, do you know how to to tap-dance?"

She is putting a sandwich together, pauses, raises her head to look at John. "No," she replies.

Ray is messing with the morning coffee: filters, finding the beans, locating the grinder etc.. He pauses from his duties to look at John.

John meets his gaze, eyes twinking and a slight smile on his face.

Ray bursts out laughing.

A**** knows something is up, but she is not sure what it is. Suspiciously she asks Ray, "What is so funny?"

A**** is not amused when Ray explains to her about Kilgore Trout, Zog and "Breakfast of Champions". She looks darkly at John.

John stares at her with new insight. He now knows that she has not come from across the galaxy to save the human race.
