Since 1945, the SCCHA has been a center for equestrian activities in and around Santa Cruz, California. Its colorful history includes many generations of horse enthusiasts competing in shows, clinics, blazing - maintaining - riding redwood and coastal trails,  and all forms of equitation, while promoting quality care, education and humane treatment of horses. 
SCCHA is the home of the famed Fireworks Endurance Ride, a sanctioned endurance ride through the redwoods to the ocean. Trails comprising this ride are spectacular and often rugged as horse & rider travel through and descend from the forested Santa Cruz Mountains torwards expansive views of blue ocean north of Santa Cruz.

Home of the SCCHA has long been the Graham Hill Showgrounds, just north of Santa Cruz. A monthly Newsletter is full of Club news, local horse related items, entertaining & educating articles, and events calendar.
Membership Meetings are listed on our web site and newsletters. Meetings have guest speakers covering a variety of engaging topics and equestrian news that affect all horse people locally. Meetings are also a great way to meet horse folks and find trail companions. Non-members welcome!

Due to Premarin production,  thousands of mares live in horribly unnatural conditions and  their foals are excess by-product. Although many alternatives exist that provide supplemental estrogen from plant sources, the company that uses mares continues to sell 3 billion dollars of Premarin each year.  Inform  friends  about the cost to the mares & foals involved in Premarin production, and make sure they know perfectly good alternatives are widely available.

Rich Casale, District Conservationist the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), will present proven methods of keeping horse paddocks and turnout pastures dryer and safer for horses and horse keepers during winter!
Rich will also have information about the next round of grants for horse property improvements - available early next year!


Say "No" to A Tax on Veterinary Services!
 
Governor Schwarzenegger wants to raise millions by adding a tax on veterinary services.  This will be reflected directly on YOUR BILL each time a veterinarian 's services are needed!
 
On November 6, Governor  Schwarzenegger called for an increase in the California state sales tax to address the multi-billion dollar deficit in the budget, and proposed a sales tax on all veterinary services.  This was part of a larger combination of program cuts and revenue increases to balance the state budget. 
 
This proposal could add approximately 9% to the cost of veterinary care.  Many animals won't get the necessary medical care and treatment they deserve because veterinary services will be more expensive.  Adding a tax to veterinary care will burden owners with highter expense to care for their animals and  lead to more animals being abandoned, or euthanized.
 
Here's what you can do to help stop the tax on veterinary services!
  Write letters, make phone calls, send emails, or fax your comments to the Governor and to your elected officials.  If writing, try to personalize your letter and be brief.  Let them know that animal health is important and that no health care should be taxed. It is wrong to burden  owners seeking to properly care for their animals.  Ask that veterinary services be removed from the Governor's proposal.  Contact:
