The information remains for historical interest only, the CSUMB server is gone now. CALIFORNIA APRS MAILING LIST aprs.info@lists.csumb.edu This CA APRS mailing list exists as an additional means of communication for users and potential users of the amateur radio software known as APRS (Amateur Position Reporting System) located within, and nearby, the State of California. The APRS software allows communication between its users, but sometimes additional forms of communication can allow faster transmission of larger amounts or more complex types of information. This mailing list allows that additional communication. There are many versions, types, and operational modes of APRS, and this list is intended to complement the use of them all. It is meant to be an aid to increase the enjoyment and effectiveness of the APRS users throughout California and nearby portions of adjacent states. BASIS AND PURPOSE The fundamental purpose of this mailing list is expressed in the following principles: (a) Recognition and enhancement of the value of the amateur radio service to the public as a voluntary noncommercial communication service, particularly with respect to providing emergency communications. (b) Continuation and extension of the amateur radio operator's proven ability to contribute to the advancement of the radio art. (c) Encouragement and improvement of the amateur radio service by advancing skills in both the communications and technical phases of the art. (d) Expansion of the existing reservoir within the amateur radio service of trained operators, technicians, and electronics experts. (e) Continuation and extension of the amateur radio operator's unique ability to enhance international goodwill. This is an open mailing list (anybody can join) provided as a courtesy of Greg Pool WH6DT at of California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB). Before the use of this server was established, the list was being run manually from the personal email account of Cap Pennell KE6AFE . The list began on March 1, 1997 with 12 members and started on the CSUMB server on August 7, 1997 with 57 members. On December 2, 1997, with a total of 84 members, the list switched from an emphasis on 145.01 MHz communications to a California statewide emphasis. On August 25, 1998, there were 157 list members. As of June 2000, there were 237 members. There are no specific restrictions on the content of messages sent to this mailing list. As a guideline, list messages should contain only information that would be allowable within the amateur radio service, in compliance with Part 97 of the Federal Communications Commission Rules and Regulations: http://www.fcc.gov/wtb/rules.html Should Cap or Greg perceive excessive abuse, they reserve the right to remove any list member. For more information, contact Cap Pennell KE6AFE or Greg Pool WH6DT .
