Take a stroll down Baghdad Lane, I dare ya

"Honestly, Wolf, you'll barely last twenty minutes out there. I don't know what part of Neverland Senator McCain is talking about when he says we can go strolling in Baghdad."
This is a quote from Time's Michael Ware to CNN's Wolf Blitzer in The Situation Room, responding to Arizona Senator John McCain's earlier claim to Blitzer that there are Baghdad neighborhoods where one can walk about safely.

McCain also added that General David Patraeus is able to travel the streets of Baghdad in unarmored personnel carriers.

Go here and here for more on this.

Just what is it with McCain? Has his advancing age put him into this dreamworld? Is it a fairytale response to his rising negative poll numbers--due to his no-holds-barred support of anything and everything George Bush is doing in Iraq? Could it be his looming Republican presidential campaign has left him no choice but to construct an alternative reality, one as baffling as the current inhabitant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, and as if anything he says is simply going to carry the day because he's John McCain, the presumed leader for the nomination?

If it ever actually was real, the much-lauded Straight Talk Express that McCain received so much credit for during his 2000 GOP presidential primary run has collided with an on-coming semi truck-trailer chock full of reality and is now but a grease spot on the political highway.

This is truly pathetic, a man of stature trashing himself. Groveling for GOP primary votes has reduced this Vietnam veteran and prisoner of war to just another 'whadya-want-to-hear' vote-grubbing politician. Going after the presidency can be a craven pursuit but it need not go to the point of gutter-diving.

Curiously, Ware also provided a telling quote in November 2006 on Joe (Lie)bermann, the third member of the unholy trinity, along with Bush and McCain:
"I and some other journalists had lunch with Senator Joe Lieberman the other day and we listened to him talking about Iraq. Either Senator Lieberman is so divorced from reality that he's completely lost the plot or he knows he's spinning a line. Because one of my colleagues turned to me in the middle of this lunch and said he's not talking about any country I've ever been to and yet he was talking about Iraq, the very country where we were sitting."
Here's an idea: let's have Bush, McCain and (Lie)bermann wander out of The Green Zone and take a stroll around Baghdad. It's time for them to put their lives where their mealy mouths are.
