Why is anyone surprised? Just why is anyone surprised about George Bush's rescue of Scooter Libby? It was due, as sure as the sun rises each day. Bush simply wasn't going to pass up an opportunity for a twofer. The chance to figuratively flip the bird to his detractors -- all 70% of them in this country -- was too grand of a gesture to pass up. Plus, Libby was obviously willing to lie and obstruct for his duet of masters but 30 months? Let's just say Scooter had far too much dirt on The Torture Twins to ever see a day in stripes. This was a given from the get-go. Call it a quid pro quo -- Libby does the dirty work, all the time knowing he would get off scot-free if anything came of his nefarious actions. So the circle is now complete. The GOP 'fallen soldier' has not only been halo-ed by the remaining faithful but is now the poster boy for Republican freedom fighting. Out a covert CIA agent and therefore disassemble a case involving Iran's nuclear aspirations -- meaning put our country at greater risk -- and the Republican Party is ecstatic. Them's some values. Here's a compelling stroll down memory lane for the 'Jesus is my fave' Commander In Chief and his bud, the Vice President: From CNN's "Inside Politics" on 8/11/00: "I will swear to uphold the laws of the land. But I will also swear to uphold the honor and the integrity of the office to which I have been elected, so help me God," said then-Governor George Bush. From CNN's "Burden of Proof" on 9/15/05: "Americans are tired of investigations and scandal, and the best way to get rid of them is to elect a new president who will bring a new administration, who will restore honor and dignity to the White House." said then-Governor George Bush From CNN's "Capital Gang" on 8/13/00: "Americans want to be assured that the next administration will bring honor and dignity to the White House." said then-Governor George Bush On August 3, 2000, CNN reported: "...Cheney described Bush, his longtime friend and the eldest son of the president he served as defense secretary through the difficult days of the 1991 Gulf War, as "a man without pretense and without cynicism: A man of principle, a man of honor." "On the first hour of the first day (of his administration)," Cheney said forcefully, Bush would "restore decency and integrity to the Oval Office. "He will show us that national leaders can be true to their word...and that they can get things done by reaching across the partisan aisle, and working with political opponents in good faith and common purpose," he continued..." Here is what should be the presidential portrait of George Bush: ![]() top |
