Colin Powell--Just What Are Your Core Beliefs?

Yo, Colin, please take a break from your 'YMCA' karaoke and think about your last four years.

Just what have you and your State Department accomplished? Tapping the brakes a time or two in the neo-con rush to invade Iraq? Making zero progress in the North Korea nukes situation because the neo-con's approach was anything-but-the-Clinton-way (which resulted in nothing)? Having the Bush Administration ignore Arafat but then fail to sustainably support acceptable successors? Declaring The Sudan's Darfur atrocities genocide with nothing following but further lip service?

I'm sure there were some behind-the-scenes successes but, even being generous, that's four strikes and now you're out.

There was talk of you staying on during the invasion of Iraq because of your commitment to the troops. Well, how has that played out? I'm open to any positives you can pass on about how your unwavering support to them has helped the grunts.

Now, your offer to President Bush to stay on during the transition to a new Secretary of State has been summarily rejected.

Like your 'pottery' warning to President Bush about him owning Iraq if he broke it by invading, look at your bruised and battered last four years.

There is always a degree of credit to be given to those who play the loyal soldier. But setting aside or contorting beliefs and values into a chiropractor's dream of geo-political Twister leaves the impression that there is no proverbial 'line in the sand' for you. That you will demur to the nth degree in favor of uber-loyalty.

Think William Ruckleshaus, Elliott Richardson, Cyrus Vance. Not candidates for sainthood but three individuals who chose to depart their political appointments over fealty to an individual whose requests clashed with their respective personal morality.

History will show you as a genuinely good person. But your 'Powell military doctrine' of never taking action unless accompanied by overwhelming and dominant force has sadly seeped into your personal decision-making and sapped you of any display of good and righteous conscience.

Forsake your 'hollow man' adaptation--only you can resurrect yourself.
