Come On You Values Voters

Do read the Angie C. Marek article titled "A Righteous Indignation" in the March 28, 2005 edition of the U.S. News & World Report.

And then say thanks that we have citizens such as Tom Wilner who sincerely value the offerings of the U.S. Constitution.

Who is Tom Wilner. Let a paragraph from the story describe him:
...A registered Democrat, Wilner grew up in a family that has always taken its particular notions of democracy very seriously. Tom's grandfather, a Polish immigrant, taught several of his children the Gettysburg Address by age 5. A history buff, Wilner says America's unique roots have shaped his view of the case. "The U.S. is different from other countries; we are not bound by a shared religion or a common race. We are bound by our principles: democracy, freedom, and the rule of law," he says. "These values are challenged in times of crisis, and that's when we must defend them..."
Wilner is providing legal representation to several Kuwaiti men being held as enemy combatants by the United States at Guantanamo Bay. The article says about 200 have been released but 540 or so remain in custody. Wonder if those 200 were dusted off, told 'sorry chap' and booted off the island 'Survivor-like?' No, that would be the British method.

The decisions of various courts have so far pushed the U.S. military into grudgingly forming tribunals to determine the status of these prisoners. A further appeals court ruling awaits.

Despite the usual onslaught of hate mail, Wilner persists.

Okay, you values voters. Does democracy, freedom and rule of law mean anything to you? Or just when it's easy and convenient?
