Communion Denial

The following is an excerpt from Yahoo News Canada that struck me as more fraudulence perpetrated by the hierarchy (not the members) of the Catholic Church:

VATICAN CITY (CP) - Bishops from around the world will begin tackling some major issues facing the Catholic Church starting Sunday, including whether Communion should be given to Catholic politicians who back abortion rights and to divorcees who remarry without getting an annulment.

(Now ex) Prime Minister Paul Martin, could be among the politicians to lose access to the sacrament of communion for his government's stand on same-sex marriage.

Despite the threat, Martin said he separates his privately held Roman Catholic beliefs from his duties as a politician.

"I am a practising Catholic, in fact I am a strong Catholic," Martin told a press conference on Friday.

"But I am also a legislator and I believe in the separation of church and state."

My question: wouldn't some of the various nefarious Popes (Benedict IX, Benedict XIV, Boniface V, John XIX, Clement VI, Leo X) throughout history also seemingly be faced with the denial of communion?

Yes, papal infallibility does not infer the Pope is exempt from liability to sin--only that he is never in error when declaring a decision on faith or morals. But declaring official doctrine for million of others to follow and then living otherwise, as a number of the Popes have quite vividly demonstrated, is the ultimate in hypocrisy. Such cannot be topped.
