Compassionless Conservatism I Digby nails it with this post. Here is an excerpt:
Am I hard of hearing? Was President Bush actually stressing his compassionless conservatism all this time? He does mumble and gets confused at times, so... Maybe we got it all wrong. Hell, maybe it was actually compassionless fiscalism he uttered, defined as 'I'm against anything that hurts the bottom line of any corporate entity'--corporate entity defined as any paid-up GOP political contributor. Or we can take another angle, one used so effectively against hapless John Kerry in 2004. Was this a flip-flop, a flop-flip, a flip or a flop President Bush? Heck, we're making it easy with a multiple choice question, your favorite kind. President Bush, why support one policy in Texas and a different one now? What has changed? Were lives in Texas back then worth less than than one in Florida now? Please explain your apparent change of mind and heart to the nation, President Bush. Yes, we agree (and you say Democrats never look for any common ground) with you, this is an important subject. Thanks for your generous contribution to this critical national debate. Can you maybe add a wee touch of filler to your breathtaking profundity so as to dull the sharp edges a tad? Oh yes, while you're at it, can you also decipher for us why this issue was important enough for you to cut short a vacation and return to Washington D.C.? Why so significant that it was okay for you to be awakened (we know how you hate that) in order to sign congressional legislation? I didn't mean to startle you but, yep, that was the sound of the other shoe dropping. My apology (see it's not that hard, try it). Here goes, in my best Peter Falk/Columbo style: Mr. President, can you let us know, just a few words will do because, you know, I get confused easy, why fishing and brush cutting in Crawford, where I'm sure the fish bite hardest and the brush grows highest, was absolutely critical when you were informed in that daily thingamajigie of yours--my I wish I had something like that to organize my day, that must be so helpful--that stressed the need for a high security alert because that wacky Bin Laden fellow wanted to fly airplanes into buildings in this country? Jeez, I was just asking, looking for a little leadership. After all, you are in charge. top |
