Dan Rather's Departure Okay, the inevitable has come to fruition and Dan Rather is leaving his CBS newscaster post in March. A number of conservatives are overjoyed by the news, feeling Rather is yet another liberal disguised as an impartial distributor of the daily news and has long deserved such a fate. Biased, in other words. Wrongly biased being the key. I say wrongly because those same
conservative critics never work themselves into a wedgie over the
conservative (read good) bias distributed daily and proudly by Fox
News or the news division at Sinclair Broadcasting. But
isn't bias bias? And despite our various political leanings, isn't it
inappropriate from wherever it comes from on the political spectrum
involving any news organization? All the facts have yet to come out on
Rather's '60 Minutes II' broadcast featuring fake documents attributed
to the late Jerry Killian. But it appears 99.9% certain at this point
that said documents were 'created' by someone other than Killian. And
for Rather's error/rush to judgment/bias (if you must) he deserves the
loss of his position as THE CBS news broadcaster. Period. That is fair.
That is appropriate. No ifs, ands or buts. No, I'm don't view myself as still wet behind the ears but I don't see this as a win for
conservatives and certainly not a loss for liberals. It is a triumph of
'right-doing,' an element fast dissipating in our society, especially
among our elite. You do wrong in broadcasting, whether it be to
sloppiness, speed or prejudice and you deserve your just fate a la Dan
Rather. It's a pity this doesn't apply to other high-level occupations or reach into say, the civilian sector at the Pentagon. So, courage Britt, courage Sean,
courage Bill (even if it cost you millions), courage Carl Cameron (how's the manicure?) and
you interchangeable faces in the main seat at Fox News. Are you willing
to shine light on your respective records? |
