Graeme Frost Derangement Syndrome

I always get a chuckle whenever I come across some loony lamenting and lambasting [boy am I on a roll or what?] those critical of George Bush or anything associated with him and offering the interpretation that such detractors of Commander Codpiece are ill with Bush Derangement Syndrome [BDS]. For how could anyone NOT back Georgius Bushius TO THE HILT? Not to do so HAS to be an easily apparent and eminently diagnosable mental illness. The distinguishing characteristic: any expression twining Bush with a negative connotation. Period.

Of course, most of remaining Bush backers, all 28 or so per cent of Americans, are feeling a tad bit isolated and confused nowadays as they face the fact that they are sputtering out BDS pronouncements on around seven out of ten people they meet on a daily basis. This includes a number husbands and wives of large families turning on each other and even their children as ten people around the dinner table leaves one with but two allies at most. Some Bush-ians are wondering when the Center For Disease Control will be issuing a nationwide alert that there is a raving BDS epidemic spreading throughout the country. Maybe FOX NEWS will step in and do the honors, that is, if certain young blonde women would just quit going pantyless or playing bumper cars on the roadways, thus allowing the thinly stretched FOX staffers some breathing room. But somehow the FOXIES will find the time to gin it up.

Now what is extremely curious is many of these very own BDS diagnosticians, offering their devout opinions of others despite lacking medical degrees or even sleeping in a Holiday Inn Express anytime in the past, have come down with their very own malady: Graeme Frost Derangement Syndrome.

It's as if Frost and his family were vetted members of Al-Queda.

In case you aren't familiar with Graeme Frost and his situation, here's an article from the Think Progress site that is a good summary:
Right Wing Launches Baseless Smear Campaign Against 12 Year Old Recipient Of SCHIP

Two weeks ago, the Democratic radio address was delivered by a 12-year old Maryland boy named Graeme Frost. Graeme told his story of being involved in a severe car accident three years ago, and having received access to medical care because of the Children’s Health Insurance Program. He said:

If it weren’t for CHIP, I might not be here today. … We got the help we needed because we had health insurance for us through the CHIP program. But there are millions of kids out there who don’t have CHIP, and they wouldn’t get the care that my sister and I did if they got hurt. … I just hope the President will listen to my story and help other kids to be as lucky as me.

The right-wing immediately condemned Democrats for daring to put a human face on the SCHIP program at a time when Bush was proposing a “diminishment of the number of children covered.” Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) — who has posed with children to advance his own political agenda — claimed Graeme was being used “as a human shield.”

Conservatives have more recently turned their targets on young Graeme Frost himself. A poster at the Free Republic propagated information alleging that Frost was actually a rich kid being pampered by the government. Among other bits of information, the post by the Freeper “icwhatudo” asserts that Graeme and his sister Gemma attend wealthy schools that cost “nearly $40,000 per year for tuition” and live in a well-off home.

The smear attack against Graeme has taken firm hold in the right-wing blogosphere. The National Review, Michelle Malkin, Wizbang, Powerline, and the Weekly Standard blog have all launched assaults on the Frost family. The story is slowly working its way into traditional media outlets as well...

Digby offered this counterpoint:
...This is so loathesome I am literally sick to my stomach. These kids were hurt in a car accident. Their parents could not afford health insurance --- and sure as hell couldn't get it now with a severely handicapped daughter. And these shrieking wingnut jackasses are harassing their family for publicly supporting the program that allowed the kids to get health care. A program, by the way, which a large number of these Republicans support as well.

They went after Michael J. Fox. They went after a wounded Iraq war veteran. Now they are going after handicapped kids. There is obviously no limit to how low these people will go...

Republican John Cole at his Balloon Juice site boiled over with this:
...I simply can not believe this is what the Republican party has become. I just can’t. It just makes me sick to think all those years of supporting this party, and this is what it has become. Even if you don’t like the S-Chip expansion, it is hard to deny what Republicans are- a bunch of bitter, nasty, petty, snarling, sneering, vicious thugs, peering through people’s windows so they can make fun of their misfortune.

I’m registering Independent tomorrow...
Self-described moderate Joe Ganderlan adds this:
...That is the way American politics now operates.

IGNORE the issue. IGNORE the debate on facts, figures, trends and what often-contradictory experts say.

Go after the people who dare to differ with you personally. If you can’t destroy then, then discredit them. Negatively label them in public, or send emails to others to try to get them to go after you.

But there ARE issues here. And the Los Angeles Times, in an editorial, notes how Mr. Bush’s veto not only makes no sense politically but as a matter of POLICY...

No wonder the GOP is in the tank.
It's an empty suit party. There is no coherent guiding philosophy, nothing for anyone to take to heart or endorse. That is, unless you simply want your spot at the trough, plus your fifteen minutes of infamy and you are willing to debase ANYONE and do WHATEVER IT TAKES to politically triumph. It can't all be attributed to Karl Rove but part of his sordid legacy is what passes as the philosophy we are seeing from these foaming-at-the-mouth, consumed with hatred troglodytes. For now, let's call it the Graeme Frost Derangement Syndrome but we all know it will victimize someone else tomorrow, and the next day and the next...
