Dream Or Nightmare?
In
the January 10-17, 2005, issue of The Nation, Ian Williams has an
article titled "The Right's Assault On Kofi Annan." Williams details
the shamelessly political and partisan right-wing rhetoric surrounding
the 'Oil-For-Food' scandal and the United National itself.
The following are statements from Williams' article, emanating from the mouths (evidently not the brains) of the hard right:
Charles (Smiley) Krauthammer describes the oil-for-food scandal as the "biggest in the history of the universe."
Monica (I clearly have little or no perspective) Crowley, bemoaning the
lack of coverage says "this is the world's biggest swindle."
The New York Times' William Safire damning the professionalism and
integrity of a U.S. civil servant he could learn more than a few things
from, complains of Kofi Annan's "manipulative abuse of Paul Volcker.
Former New York Mayor Ed Koch (Ed, sorry to say it but you're not doing
so well), in the New York Sun, opines that "Annan's ability to lead the
U.N. is seriously impaired. He no longer has the confidence of America
because of his failure to create a consensus on Iraq among the
permanent members."
The National Review stated "Annan should either resign, if he is honorable, or be removed, if he is not."
Safire again takes up the cudgel with the scandal having no end "until
Kofi Annan, even if he is personally innocent, resigns, having, through
initial ineptitude and final obstructionism, brought dishonor on the
Secretariat of the United Nations."
U.S. Representative Scott Garrett (R-Mars) said: "To me the question
should not be whether Kofi Annan should be in charge. To me, the larger
question is whether he should be in jail."
Minnesota Senator Norm Coleman (apparently awakened from his long
hibernation) said: "It is my personal and steadfast belief that Mr.
Annan should step down in order to protect the long-term integrity and
credibility of the United Nations."
Okay, here we go, let's play a game.
Substitute the name of George Bush, or hey, even Don Rumsfeld, in place
of Kofi Annan, in a number of the quotes above. Also, insert United
States in place of United Nations.
After doing so, then ask yourself, am I having a wonderful dream or a horrendous nightmare?
