Humanism Equals Moralism Are you as sick and tired of the painfully ignorant and, worse, the knowing liars, who attempt to brand many Democrats, humanists, secularists and even non-right-wing Christians as moral relativists and therefore sinful? They know not of what they speak, but of course that isn't even a speedbump to them in the mad rush to saddle non-believers or other-believers (the different) with such baggage. But don't 'insult' them by pointing this out. For when does a non-believer have the right to address the devout, the 'Jesus-in-my-heart' crowd, about morality and values? We have obviously forsaken such by our non-belief. Let's see, just who might be the moral relativist: the one who chooses to be ethical because it is the highest standard to live by or the individual who at least psychologically adheres to certain values due to fear of a nasty afterlife? There is certainly some wiggle space in the comparison but I plant my flag with the people who do right because it is right, period. Humanism is defined as a system of thought that centers on humans and their values. That morality originates from human beings, with the belief that each human being is a precious commodity. In humanism as well as secularism, nothing emanates from religious or a religious body edict. And that is the key stumbling block. Non-secularists seemingly cannot undertstand that a philosophical adherence to morality and ethics doesn't require religious belief. And that secularists and non-secularists can be EQUALLY guilty of moral relativism. Take President George Bush. He is a professed Christian, held in the highest regard by many clergy and worshippers. His religious belief seemingly provide immunity from charges of living and breathing moral relativism, the so-called turgid backwater of the faithless because they possess no righteous underpinning. Well, then just why is President Bush cozying up to the monsters who govern Sudan, the very same people Bush's former Secretary of State stated were conducting a genocide in Darfur? Oh, is it because Sudan is now providing terrorist intelligence to the United States? Can you spell m-o-r-a-l r-e-l-a-t-i-v-i-s-m? Well, then just why is President Bush cozying up to the perverse fiends who govern Uzbekistan, the very same people our State Department ackowledges use beatings, asphyxiation, electro shock, 'manicures' and 'pedicures' with pliers and the boiling of body parts to 'soften up' prisoners? Oh, is it because Uzbekistan accepts our 'rendering' of terror suspects and softens them up? Can you spell m-o-r-a-l r-e-l-a-t-i-v-i-s-m? Well then, why did President Bush state on September 30, 2003 that "I don't know of anybody in my administration who leaked classified information. If somebody did leak classified information, I'd like to know it, and we'll take the appropriate action" when all he has to do is ask his staff what the truth is but has obviously decided not do so because it would damage his political agenda? Can you spell m-o-r-a-l r-e-l-a-t-i-v-i-s-m? Well, why then did President Bush offer this perspective on November 3, 2003 that "...in a compassionate society, people respect one another, respect their points of view. And they take responsibility for the decisions they make. The culture of America is changing from one that has said, if it feels good, do it, and if you've got a problem, blame somebody else, to a new culture in which each of us understands we are responsible for the decisions we make in life..." when he had worn out the muscles in his right index finger pointing to others for his own errors and misjudgments? Can you spell m-o-r-a-l r-e-l-a-t-i-v-i-s-m? Okay, let's stop the charade. President Bush is tops at redefining reality as it suits him. Based on his present occupational position, doesn't that make him the #1 moral relativist in this country? Ye religionists, I will always stand for your right to believe, will you do the same? I am not threatened by your belief, can you say the same? I respect your right to think and believe differently, can you acknowledge the same? Just do not label me and countless others as lesser than thou. Your highest profile patriarchs, President Bush, Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Bill O'Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, et al, can and do relativize with the best. And if you can't admit that, voila, you're on the way to their status. top |
