A new feature: In Their Own Words...

We're introducing a new feature here, one that will run as often as materially is supplied. It is individuals saying something vitally important or, at the other end of the spectrum, hoisting themsevles on their own petard, if you will.

Here's Marc Cooper with a great, great line about the 'hot' Republican candidate du jour. This one had me falling out of my chair in laughter so, of course, here it is. In a blog entry about the paucity of worthwhile GOP presidential candidates, Cooper gets to Fred Thompson:
"...And don't tell me it's gonna be Fred Thompson. He's got all the freshness about him of a day-old corpse."
and

TBogg put it ever so eloquently on Tuesday, June 5 -- gotta love the last two lines -- with a column about the pleas for a Scooter Libby pardon. After commenting about the death and destruction the neo-cons have wrought:
"...These are the consequences of the actions and chest-thumping policies of people like Scooter Libby, Bill Kristol, Richard Perle, Paul Wolfowitz, Dick Cheney, Doug Feith, etc. They play a game where only other people lose, but never themselves. Then they just move on to think tanks and visiting professorships and book contracts where nobody ever points out to them that they fucked up. They fucked up really bad.

If there was a shred of decency or an ounce of courage in any one of them, take your pick, they would each be making an appointment with Mr. Heavy Rope and Mr. Stout Overhead Beam, and their last act on earth would be to pin a note to their shirt that simply states: "I'm sorry. I was wrong."
and

Judge Reggie Walton didn't exactly see eye to eye with the Scooter-holics and their attempt to plaster the court with odes about Scooter making it his life's purpose to save kittens and puppies -- no, make that starving, diseased and mistreated kitten and puppies -- from certain death. Here's Walton's not-so-subtle fuck-you right back at the collection of twits:
"It is an impressive show of public service when twelve prominent and distinguished current and former law professors of well-respected schools are able to amass their collective wisdom in the course of only several days to provide their legal expertise to the Court on behalf of a criminal defendant. The Court trusts that this is a reflection of these eminent academics' willingness in the future to step to the plate and provide like assistance in cases involving any of the numerous litigants, both in this Court and throughout the courts of our nation, who lack the financial means to fully and properly articulate the merits of their legal positions even in instances where failure to do so could result in monetary penalties, incarceration, or worse. The Court will certainly not hesitate to call for such assistance from these luminaries, as necessary in the interests of justice and equity, whenever similar questions arise in the cases that come before it."
and

In looking for something else, we came across this and are posting it to curtial that mighty head of steam Duncan Hunter is building up in his charge for the GOP presidential nomination. From an April 18, 2006 CNN article comes these gems:
"...The chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, Rep. Duncan Hunter, also issued a statement of "strong and continuing support" for [Secretary of Defense Donald] Rumsfeld.

The California Republican said the secretary's decision on the size of the force needed to topple Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein "turned out to be sound."

"Clearly the lightning strike to Baghdad in 18 days validated Secretary Rumsfeld's invasion strategy," Hunter said. "With respect to the occupation, it is clear that asymmetric operations of the insurgents that focus mainly on roadside bombs and suicide bombers are not tactics which can be overwhelmed by simply increasing troop levels."
Guess who voted for the recent troop surge?

Have a great, great weekend.
