Moral Values...Again

In this morning's New York Times (I know, I know, you right-wing jihadists, fill in your shibboleth 'the Chronicle From Satan'), comes an article that doesn't quite seem to fit the tired mantra liberal media.

Curiously, the article, written by Pete Thamel, is in the sports section of all places and headlined: "From Hollywood To Small Town, Common Ground." The subject is a comparison of USC signal caller Matt Leinart. and Oklahoma quarterback Jason White.

What struck me the most about the article was how Thamel wrote about but didn't amplify on a major difference in the lives of these two young men. But maybe sports and politics are a combustible combination.

Leinart is shown as Holllywood's boy toy of the moment, on the cover of various 'entertainment magazines and mixing with the 'it' celebs.

Thamel depicts White as the aw shucks, second coming of Mayberry's Opie Taylor, 'the' humble celebrity of Norman, Oklahoma, ummarried but residing with the mother of his two-year-old daughter Tinley.

Leinart runs with the Hollywood crowd. White changes diapers.

As White is quoted in the article: "He's Hollywood, and I'm from a small town in Oklahoma."

The article makes both appear to be fine young men. They are acquainted with one another and have a friendly relationship.

But isn't it a bit incongruent that blue-stater Leinart comes from a geographical area stained as a major purveyor of filth and immorality and is closely associated with such 'sin' in the article while White, a red stater, has obviously engaged in pre-marital sex, is currently living in sin but is presented more as a golly-gee Boy Scout tossing around a football in between switching Pampers.

This is nothing against either person. But just who is living the higher moral values so often espoused as an inbred Republican trait? Do sports heroes get a free pass in solely red states?

Maybe we should check with Oklahoma's newly-elected U.S. Senator, the right freaky Tom Coburn. That would be interesting.
