Doc Cogitator Prescribes Medicine For The Democrats
You
insiders, do not fear Howard Dean, unless you are specifically and
solely thinking of your current financial benefits and positions of
power. Well, yes, I know you wouldn't because you're an altruistic
lefty and all that, but those mortgage payments on the flat in
Georgetown are a bit steep, aren't they? And Maslow said
self-preservation comes before all else so...
What you and your compadres have been doing hasn't exactly turned out
terrific the last decade so more of the same old-same old won't cut it
inless you wish to produce even greater alienation in the ranks of
Democrats and continued losses.
Yes, there will be some growing pains, false starts and unfruitful
detours and not everyone will be happy campers. But the current unhappy
contingent outnumbers you. And we want to provide input, not just
checks, to the various captains charting our 2005 and beyond course.
We all want the same thing but it's time for a makeover. One that includes input from both the pros AND us amateurs.
Simply put: it is not a matter of hedging towards the middle. Or veering off the map to the left.
It's:
- creating and utilizing a "60-second me" sound bite that is the crux of what Democrats believe
- standing up and fighting back
whenever and wherever possible - conciliation is fine but not in the
midst of being clubbed over and over - quit being always nice - if we
won't defend ourselves, how do we convince voters that Democrats will
defend them?
- defining, illustrating and displaying Democratic Party bedrock principles
- displaying backbone and initiative by speaking out and up in correlation to those principles
- developing new solutions to the problems of 2005 and beyond
- utilizing appropriate language and framing in discussing values and principles
- re-building and funding the state and local party infrastructure throughout all 50 states
- hammering on economic fairness issues regardless of the weak-kneed who wring their hands about "promoting" class warfare
- accepting, embracing and utilizing both the
netroots of the Democratic Party and the technology available to
dispense calls to action, important information and "news" influencing
public opinion
- lessening, hopefully eliminating, the dependence on and debilitating resulting effect of corporate political donations
- creating a long-term, think tank-like Democratic infrastructure to infuse the various media with analysis and studies
Well, the house call is over.
