Jeez, Who Woulda Thought...Obviously, Not President Bush

A lawyer represents his client. A police officer defends the law-abiding citizens. An accountant makes sure that personal tax returns are in order. All, at least theoretically, perform their respective duties to the best of their abilities. If not, depending on the severity of the error, failing to do so can result in professional and legal discipline and loss of employment.

Just what does the President of the United States do? Such a person obviously has a myriad of responsibilities. But at the very least, the President needs to defend the citizens of his country to the best of his and his appointees abilities against attack.

Well, here is Condoleeza Rice on 5/16/02 explaining away the first major dereliction of duty and responsibility by President George W. Bush:

"...I don't think anybody could have predicted that these people would take an airplane and slam it into the World Trade Center, take another one and slam it into the Pentagon; that they would try to use an airplane as a missile, a hijacked airplane as a missile. All of this reporting about hijacking was about traditional hijacking. You take a plane -- people were worried they might blow one up, but they were mostly worried that they might try to take a plane and use it for release of the blind Sheikh or some of their own people..."
Here is President Bush himself on 5/17/02:
"Had I known that the enemy was going to use airplanes to kill on that fateful morning, I would have done everything in my power to protect the American people."
Jey-soos, why not? Does it take a handwritten note complete with explicit instructions, including times, dates and places? Isn't that what a vast number of government people are getting paid to do? Think. Go outside the box. Plan. Prepare for any number of contingencies. Imagine. Look at the spectrum from best-case to worst-case scenarios and be ready.

Here is more President Bush on 5/17/02:
"I take my job as the Commander-in-Chief very seriously; that my most important job is to protect America and to protect our homeland. I do whatever it takes...We will use the might of America to protect the American people."
Whatever it takes? Protect the American people?

Mr. President, I guess repealing the estate tex, privatizing Social Security and pushing for round three on tax cuts are more important to you than the lives of American soldiers and citizens. Did such 'absolutely critical' diversions play a factor in you losing focus and failing to deal with actual threats to America?

And President Bush: seriously, just exactly where does
your praise to top FEMA administrator Michael Brown that--"you're doing a heck of a job,"--fit into protecting the American people along the Gulf Coast?

Again, President Bush: seriously, just exactly where does the lies of Brown and Homeland Security Chief Michael Chertoff fit into using the might of America to protect the American people?

It's past time for excuses Mr. President. We are again at a junction in time desperate for leadership and you, President Bush, have twice been found wanting. Step aside, ease into a permanent vacation and let someone more capable take your place. We cannot afford a third major man-made or act of nature tragedy with you helming an insufficient preparation and response. You obviously have a talent for creating and feeding a catastrophe but your response-in-time-of-need incompetency is a burden we can no longer bear.

So, just resign.

I know you won't. But you, your judgment, decisions and priorities, and those of your inadequate appointees have put America at risk. This imperilment cannot be tolerated any longer. If you are truly a patriot, then set aside the ego, forget the well-timed obtusifications and the oh-so-planned photo-ops. Political strategy is never a replacement for capability. Not unless the human lives hanging in the balance just don't matter.

Do they?

It's your choice.
