The photos currently on this page are all from the area of Death Valley, California. Death Valley National Monument originally included mainly Death Valley itself and the surrounding mountains on the rim of the valley. With the passage of the Desert Protection Act on Oct. 31, 1994, Death Valley was designated a National Park. At that time an additional 1.3 million acres of land were added to the park, making it the largest national park in the contiguous United States. The new park boundary expanded to include several of the smaller yet spectacular valleys surrounding Death Valley proper.
