Panamint Dunes are located at the northern end of Panamint Valley.  A ten mile drive down a dirt road, then another 4.5 miles of cross-country hiking will bring you to the heart of these magnificent sand dunes.   During the Summer the intense heat makes this excursion impractical.  It is best done during the Winter months.  Sand dunes are most impressive in early morning or late afternoon light when long shadows accentuate the intricate ripples and contours.   In order to view Panamint Dunes under these conditions usually requires camping over night in the dunes, a memorable and worthy experience.
