Ramsey Gulch
celebrates fourth month
By local activist
On October 18th
the treesit village in Ramsey Gulch celebrated four months of responsible
ancestry and determined ecosystem protection. Now consisting of
five platforms located along a network of 30 traverses (rope walkways
connecting one tree to another), the efforts of 'Earth First! Santa
Cruz' and the 'Canopy Action Network' have ensured the continued
survival of 2 acres (more than 75 trees) of threatened coastal redwood
forest.
The tree-sitters
recently braved winds upwards of 50mph and the first heavy rains
of the season, but spirits in the village are high, especially in
light of the recent dismissal of Redwood Empires' specious lawsuit
- a ludicrous attempt by timber baron Roger Burch to get forest
defenders to pay lost wages and profits for loggers who should have
been otherwise employed and trees that should never have been considered
for the mill.
With the trumped-up
charges of Redwood Empire and Burch out of the way, EF! Santa Cruz,
Canopy Action Network, and the forest defense community in Santa
Cruz look confidently to our goal, which remains unchanged: to permanently
preserve the portion of Ramsey Gulch we have protected, and to hold
Roger Burch, Redwood Empire, and their subcontracting lackeys -
'High Country Timber', and 'Columbia Logging Co.' - accountable
for their illegal and irresponsible logging operation.
Thanks for
all of your continuing support! The people in the tree are only
branches of this campaign, which is nourished by the root structure
of community involvement and generous donations.
