Ceramics 1 Slab Container Assignment
The purpose of this assignment is for you to design and construct a container
using slabs with certain specifications. There should be many different solutions
to this problem.
Step one
Before you begin this assignment, I would like you to do some simple sketches
of your design plan. I want to see ten different design plans. You may work
with other students in class to share ideas about this problem.
Step Two
Show me your plans for your points and make a pattern out of paper so you may get the tarpaper you need to construct your project.
Step three
You will construct your project out of clay slabs using tarpaper as a backing
and evaluate the results.
The Problem
You are to make a container with a lid. The container may not be in the shape
of a square, rectangle, or a circle. Think of all the different shapes or
combinations
of shapes you can use that will fit this requirement. It could have some
round sides and some flat sides. It could be a freeform organic shape.
The second part of the assignment is a bit more involved. The lid of your container must be able to stand on its own as a container meaning that when you take the lid off your project and put it on the table it could be used on its own as a container ( or be a separate pot ) . The lid must fit well and both the container and lid should sit firmly on a table. Think of how you will design the lid so it does not slide off your container. You may need to design some sort of rim or flanges for your lid so it will not slide off.You could also design your container with various compartments to hold things like a jewelry box. If you want to get strait sides you might need to let your slabs firm up a bit before you put them together. Remember to use slip and score all edges before putting your project together. Your container must be at least six inches tall.
