Ceramics One Pinch- Pot Assignment


The purpose of this assignment is to get you to start to feel comfortable with clay and to get you to experiment with as many techniques in decoration as possible. Your goal is to make your pots the best quality you possibly can and be critical of your work and know when you need to destroy a pot and try again. You are to make six pots and do the various requirements below:

1. All pinch pots should have rounded bottoms ( You will be shown how to put feet on them later)
2. Try to make one pot as wide as you possibly can without turning it into a plate or tortilla.
3. Try to make one pot as tall as you possibly can using the pinch method.
4. Try to close in the neck of one of your pots as much as you can so it has a bottle or vase shape.
5. Try some sort of decoration to the rim ( the top of the pot ) meaning make the rim of the pot different and unique compared to the others.
6. Make the other two unique in that they do not look like any of the others that you have completed. In other words each of your six pots should have a unique shape and no two should look the same.

Decoration


You will be decorating your pots when they are finished so you Must keep them all damp by keeping them wrapped in plastic when you Are not working on them. You will do the following decoration techniques which will be explained individually as you continue on with
your pots. Five of your six pots will need to be scraped before you start decorating them.


1. One pot will be burnished
2. One pot will have a wax resist or paper resist decoration using Engobe.
3. One pot will have a decoration which is painted on with a small brush using engobe. The decoration should be drawn on with a pencil before it is painted on.
4. One pot will be dipped in engobe, then the decoration will be carved into the pot.
5. One pot will be kept plain.
6. One pot should have a combination of two of the above decorating methods ( excluding the plain pot as a decorating method)
When all of your pots are complete and
decorated they will be evaluated for a grade and the best will be fired.
