Make a house number tile set and a family name plate for your house .

This assignment involves your making tiles out of slabs using a tile cutter and carving the tiles to add designs and numbers. You will need to let the tiles set up to be leather hard so you may carve them and you will need to control their drying so they will not warp. You will also make a family name plate to go with your house number tiles.

How to start

As always you will need to plan this project out. You will need to make design plans for your number tiles and name plate. You may want to experiment doing your designs on the computer and print them out so you may copy them on to your clay tiles. You may also want to look for various type to use to carve out your family name. Finally you will need to make various design ideas for decoration to go along with your nameplate and numbers . You may use any of the press molds available to add to your tiles. You may also incorporate designs from the internet or design books.Your number tiles will need one decorated tile on each side and your name plate will need to have decorations that enhances the name. In other words you may not simply carve out your family name on a slab of clay.Remember that your decoration should enhance your number and name, not overwhelm it. Before you start you will need to:

1. Produce ten different tile designs either by drawing them by hand or on the computer. Each tile design needs to be 4.5 inches square. Some may incorporate house numbers and some may be design ideas for tiles for either side of your house number.

2. Do three design ideas for your family name plate. You should experiment with different kinds of fonts and different decoration. If you have a large design you should make it in two or three sections.

3. Roll out your slab, cut out your tiles, and transfer your design to your tiles and nameplate.

4. Using a carving tool , carve out your designs and add relief designs if you plan to do so.

5. Once your project is complete, put all the tiles together so you may grade your project.
