* Will Walk For Money! *

Shelly has sent the FTTW office a log of her experience on her hike.
Click here to read the log!

There are 6 parts to the log, and a post script in conclusion. If you've already read some, and want to go to the next part, you can go right to it:

The following is the information Shelly Skye has sent out to people about the hike she will be doing this summer:

As some of you may know, I am planning to hike the John Muir Trail in July of this year. The trip consists of 221 miles, climbing 9 passes over 10, 000 feet and culminating in a summit of Mt. Whitney, at 14,495, the highest point in the lower 48 states.

I have decided to use my hike to try and raise money for the program at Cabrillo College that is near and dear to my heart, the Fast Track To Work Program. I have been privileged to work with this group for the past three years. During my tenure here, I have seen the demands for our services grow while our resources continue to shrink.

I'll give you some information about the kind of students we work with in our program. We serve over 300 students a semester, many of whom are attending college for the first time, having never seen themselves as being able to achieve a college degree or certificate. Some of our students are individuals who were formerly gainfully employed but lost their jobs in the recent economic downturn or when their took business overseas.

In the past two years, our program has been cut by over 47%. This means that we have less money to help students with things like childcare, work-study grants, and other special assistance awards we have been able to make in years past. In addition, counseling hours have been severely cut, even while students continue to request services from our office. It is my hope that this project will in some small way help or program with much needed funds.

I am asking you to consider supporting this endeavor of mine with a small donation. What is small? Well, if everyone I ask can pledge just $.01 per mile ($2.21), then we will be that much closer to assisting students in ways we can't currently afford.

I know the times are tough for everyone right now. I want to thank you for considering donating to the cause of assisting needy FTTW students.

Below is information on what you can do to help.

Sincerely,
Shelly Skye. Counselor, FTTW
