The Choral Project, the nationally and internationally acclaimed Bay
Area vocal ensemble, will present two performances of "Voices of Love,"
a concert that explores the different perspectives and views on love:
those of a man's and those of a woman's. The program will feature works
by women and men composers, as well as favorite poems by well-known
poets male and female. This concert will be both touching and
light-hearted, tender and humorous. Repertoire will include pieces by
Orlando di Lasso, Johannes Brahms, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Kirke Mechem
and Eric Whitacre.
About the concert, Artistic Director Daniel Hughes shares, "This program
features repertoire from the Renaissance to contemporary, illustrating
the timelessness of love. As I poured through books of poetry in search
of the perfect poems by men and women to thread this concert together
with the music, I was touched by the sense of eternity of this emotion.
Love and its reactions haven't seemed to change much since humankind has
been able to express this feeling. Whether the author is male or female,
gay or straight, rich or poor, educated or ignorant, this emotion seems
to affect everyone in a similar fashion. The vast array of poems on
this concert married with the broad range of literature hope to offer a
charming view of what it is to love, to be loved or to long for it. A
bit a jollity, a touch of levity, some joy, some sorrow and much
tenderness present a performance that has something for everyone."
The performances will be held Saturday, March 27, at 8:00pm, at Le Petit
Trianon, 72 North Fifth Street, San Jose, and Sunday, March 28, at
4:00pm at the UC Santa Cruz Music Recital Hall, UC Santa Cruz Campus,
Meyer Drive.
Tickets are $20 general/$15 students-seniors and are available on
The VISION of The Choral Project is "to heal the world through music and
words."
The Choral Project was founded by Artistic Director Daniel Hughes in
September 1996 in an effort to expand the choral art through excellence
of high-level choral literature and to bridge the gap between text and
music, singer and spectator. The 35 voice ensemble rehearses at Lincoln
Glen Church in the Willow Glen area of San José.
The Choral Project has performed throughout Northern California in
concert performances, interfaith services, and choral festivals. Some of
these performances include the honor of being selected as a performing
choir at the American Choral Directors Association Western Division
Convention in Los Angeles (March 2000), the showcase choir for the
National Association of Composers of the USA Composer's Competition
(November 2000), and the featured performing ensemble for the California
Music Educators Association Conference (January 2001). In June 2001, The
Choral Project embarked on its first international tour to Mexico and
Costa Rica, reaching a larger audience and connecting with other choral
ensembles. In October of 2002, the Choral Project represented the State
of California at the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. at the State
Day Celebration for California.
Committed to a brighter future for our world, the Choral Project makes
yearly contribution to charitable organizations, including
Toys-for-Tots, Resource Area for Teachers, Aris, Big Brothers/Big
Sisters, The Rain Forest Project, and SARDUS (Search and Rescue Dogs of
the United States).
