Beaver Dam

This is an area of the river that has not been grazed by cows for a few years. Ponds, cattails, mirror reflections of clouds and the subtle color variation of grasses, twigs, beaver wood and a nest hang in some willow branches in this lively place. We find a log-hop and rock-hop way through the dense brush and tawny grasses. The subtle haze of color that flattens the horizon in front of me is made with blended hues of gray and salmon. Rows of chewed to falling trees surround the ponds and the clouds are laying on the surface of the water like delicate silk paintings. The beaver don't corrupt the landscape but help build pools for fish and wildlife. This stretch of the river is layered with many different grasses, and a marsh life that is missing from the other over-grazed portions just up and down river. It is refreshing to see how life can restore itself with care and quiet.
