This started as a project to index two books I own, which were difficult to use as references due to lack of same. The books are "Roses for an Empress," and "The Complete Book of 169 Redouté Roses" by F. L. Anderson. The roses have different names in the two books, and differ from the current names for those roses still existing. I decided to add to my index the current species and common names where available, and the volume and page number of the original print in Les Roses when I could find them. I have since bought "P.-J. Redouté Roses" by Miller Graphics,1978, and"Redouté's Roses" by Wellfleet Press,1990. The 1978 book was copied from the 1835 edition, and includes three roses not in the other two books, and some of the others were altered slightly by other artists. Pages in this book are not numbered, so I added numbers starting with the title page. My primary references for this project were "The Graham Stuart Thomas Rose Book," Suzanne Verrier's "Rosa Gallica," and Ellen Willmott's "The Genus Rosa" in that order. I also used Phillips and Rix, Gerd Krussman's "Complete Book of the Rose," David Austin, Trevor Griffiths, Modern Roses 3, the Combined Rose List 1994, the guide to the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden. I checked Beales for any still missing species, but he didn't have them either.
Some information was found which could not be put in the index. One of the gallica roses illustrated is called 'Aimable Rouge' aka 'La Triomphe'. It is described as purple pink, with deep shading and veining, a tight cluster of stamens, double and well formed. I cannot find an unnamed rose that fits this description.
Recently I was given a list of the paintings in the order they appeared in the original three volumes. The source of the list is Keith Stock's "Rose Books." I have been able, using that list, to assign original volume and page numbers to all of the paintings, although a few of the page numbers could be off by a page or two.
This link may be of use to you. Paul Barden's Webpagecontains articles including one by Brent Dickerson about early China roses, some of which were painted by Redouté. There used to be a site with pictures of Redoute's paintings, but it is no longer there. If anyone reading this knows of another site with the paintings, please let me know. Daphne Filiberti sent me some information on the Damask roses , which you can read on her website, which includes Redouté's paintings of them.
Roses listed in Modern Roses XI or other recent publications are assumed to be living, although many are in private gardens, and not available. I've marked these with an * to indicate thay are probably still alive.
Where I have put a question mark, I have found some evidence, but don't fully trust the source, or the information was incomplete. All accent marks have been left out.
Please e-mail me if you have any additions or corrections.
