Covering Ground - a chronicle of the John Muir Trail - edited and illustrated by Donna Thomas (2003).
In the summer of 2002 Donna hiked the John Muir Trail for the
second time. Her friend Katy joined her on this 218 trek, from California's
Yosemite Valley to Mt Whitney, and a number of other people (including Peter)
joined in at various times. Donna painted two miniature books on that trip,
Landscapes of the John Muir Trail and Wildflowers of the John Muir Trail.
This book combines some of those paintings with text written by some of those
people who accompanied Donna on her journey. The text is letterpress printed,
with a rainbow roll of colors, on Peter's handmade paper, using metal engravings
to reproduce Donna's hand written text. The color illustrations were laser
printed, on Peter's handmade paper, and are tipped onto the pages. The book
is Coptic bound, using a very special Irish linen thread. There are colored
endpages and the boards are clear heart redwood salvaged from the interior
of our neighbors house and cut and finished with the help of Donna's brother
John and Tony Graziano. Donna has carved a unique landscape into the front
cover of each book.
4 1/2 by 7 1/2, 48 pages. 25 copies.
