Variations
in leaf patterns
The leaves of Santa Cruz Mountain toadshades may be without a spot.
They can be almost solid spots. The spots are most often dark green
or brownish. Sometimes they are dark, steel blue. Sometimes the markings
are lighter green or almost silver. Some plants have several types
of spots.
It might be proposed that leaf patterns are somehow protective. Such
a conjecture would surely need special modifications, for toadshade
leaves often can be discerned from afar, and, unfortunately, deer
sometimes dote upon them.
