'April' - Momma Hawk
'Sky' - Papa Hawk
'?' & '??'- Baby Hawks 2009
Feb 2009 - I spotted momma hawk (April) & poppa hawk (Sky) a few times this month flying by during occasional breaks between storms. Weather has been rainy & cold all month, so not much action.
Mar 7 - Finaly a good weather weekend and I saw April today as she flew in to the nest. She spent a long time in the nest and only flew off for a short while before returning. She is spending the night there so I suspect she is sitting on an egg.
Mar 8 - Spotted April today in the nest squawking. Before long, Sky arrived with something to eat and then flew off. Mom is there all the time it seems.
Mar 19 - April has been sitting in the nest for the last 11 days now. I sometimes see her head but usually just a few tail feathers poking up.
Mar 29 - Saw both Sky & April flying for a short time. Sky brought a snake to the nest and maybe shared some of it before flying off with it.
Mar 30 - Saw April jump out of the nest and fly overhead - looking for food I think - before heading back to the nest.
April 4- Saw April & Sky fly together right overhead - very slowly just catching an updraft and heading south toward Santa Cruz.
April 5-15 - April spends almost all her time in the nest. WE think she's sitting on her egg(s).
April 16 - April seems different today and is more up on the side of the nest. Sky has also visited. We suspect there might be an egg hatched but don't kn ow for sure.
April 18 - We are seeing April doing some feeding now. She is pulling apart something and must be feeding a baby but we have yet to see it.
April 19 - Joanne says she saw the baby's white feathers but only briefly.
April 20-24 - April squaks usually sometime in the morning. I haven't seen Sky come by but he must be because April continues to feed.
May 2 - After a week of rainy weather, we finally got some time to watch the nest today and we spotted 2 babies this year. April & Sky were both around and feeding them. At one point both April & Sky flew slowly overhead scouting out the ground for dinner.
May 9 - Babies are getting stronger and sometimes come up to the edge of the nest to look out. Both are covered in white down and are very cute.
May 12 - Spotted 2 bird feet sticking up out of the nest. Must be some dead bird mom or dad caught for dinner. Later they were gone. Need to name the babies this year.
June 22 - Both babies survived and turned into fledglings. We first saw the baby hawks flying around June 2 this year. Earlier than last year. It seemed that having 2 birds made the process easier as they tended to teach and challenge each other. They gradually became pretty good fliers and circle over the yard quite a lot. I have many pictures of them flying around which all look the same. I'll try to get a few to post. They are now mostly absent but seem to come around each day still.
