My students read Saint-Exupery's Le Petit Prince, and I find Anne Brown's workbook an invaluable learning resource and accompaniment. Each lesson of A la Découverte du Petit Prince provides an introduction to vocabulary; grammar reviews of structure relevant to the chapter being read; and thorough comprehension questions that are effective prompts for absorbing discussion. Composition topics are creative and fun and cover all the important themes in the literary work. The teacher's annotated edition is of stellar quality. I highly recommend this effective workbook for a deepened appreciation of Le Petit Prince.
As a beginning high school French teacher, Anne Gassaway Brown found no study materials to accompany the reading of Le Petit Prince, by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.
As a result, she developed her own student lessons for this timeless story.
What is noteworthy and satisfying about these lessons is that, as the readers are improving and honing their language skills, they are also invited to become introspective and express their own thoughts and insights about the story.
Encouraged by the enthusiastic support of parents, students, and French teacher colleagues, both the student's workbook,
A la Découverte du Petit Prince, An Enrichment Workbook for Exploring Language and Themes, and the corresponding Annotated Teacher's Edition,
of the same title, were published, making these study guides widely available.
Recently out-of-print, these two valuable workbooks have now been re-published in a new Second Edition. Anne Gassaway Brown grew up in the country in San Diego County, California. When she was fourteen, her family of seven lived in England for a year, while her father studied at the University of London. This exposure to a larger world view led her to major in French. She studied in France for two years, culminating in a Master's degree from Middlebury College. She has taught French for twenty years, being able to return to France many times. She now lives in California's Santa Cruz Mountains. |
