Carpentry
Carpentry has begun to change dramatically in the last ten years and will continue to change as the quality and availability of lumber declines. Most lumber sold today is second and third growth stock with annual rings up to 1/2î wide, lots of sapwood, knots, wood destroying insects, rot, splits and warpage to name a few problems.
Remedy: Hand
pick the lumber by looking over each piece and selecting out the bad ones.
You can also check out recycling yards that specialize in used building
materials. Many boatbuilders I know find lumber obtained from demolished
buildings to be far superior to newly cut wood.
