Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Social Work, with a focus on Health and Mental Health.
  • Extensive counseling experience with individuals and families from diverse backgrounds including assessment and crisis intervention.
  • Bilingual Spanish-English skills and extensive experience working with Latinos in Santa Cruz area.

Experience

Research

  • Research Assistant with U.C.S.F. Prevention Studies; survey design, list compilation, literature search, and consulting on community-based AIDS prevention programs
  • Designed and conducted survey of Davenport area residents’ needs and interests, for use in program development. 17 households interviewed; report was instrumental in bringing public health program to this small community.
  • Field research with Monterey-Santa Cruz Responsible Beverage Project: data collection in local bars regarding alcohol consumption. Observation, recording, and coding.
  • Ethnoarchaeological research with UNESCO in isolated Peruvian valley: interviewing, mapping, and photography.
  • Consultant with Santa Cruz AIDS Project while completing MSW thesis on Latinas and AIDS Prevention: 13 Spanish-speaking women were interviewed.

Counseling and Case Management

  • Assessment, brief counseling and case management with low-income families at four local schools for 1½ years.
  • Assessment, brief counseling and case management with individuals with health and mental health problems, including SCAP MDI program, Hospice, 2 hospitals and 3 home health agencies for 6+ years.
  • Counseled adolescents and their families in Watsonville.
  • Developed teen parent support group including outreach and facilitation.
  • Collaborated with non-profit agencies and county programs in order to meet health, mental health, and other needs for clients.
  • Counseling and case management with many Spanish-speaking individuals and families in Watsonville, Santa Cruz and Pajaro for 12 years.

Administration and Supervision

  • Coordinated office for refugee services: intake, orientation, interpreting, case management. Newsletter coordination, meeting facilitation, event planning, and liaison to religious and community groups.
  • Supervision of interns and volunteers at three agencies, and of office staff at a community health center.
