CoHousing
is an international movement or approach to creating communities. I see
it as being half way between a commune and a condominium complex! Ideally
it is a great blend of sharing with others and retaining some privacy.
In Santa Cruz there is one CoHousing community already and at least three
groups are meeting to explore possibilities for acquiring land, building
homes and a central house and garden, etc.
From
the CoHousing Network: "Cohousing is a style of neighborhood design
that combines private residences with shared facilities. Cohousing neighborhoods
are physically designed to encourage community, for example by building
houses to face one another around a common courtyard. Cohousing communities
tend to be environmentally sustainable, diverse, and child friendly. Cohousing
is a way for people to have greater connection with their neighbors and
reduce the cost of living by sharing resources." For more information,
see The Cohousing Network. (cohousing.org)
One CoHousing project already exists in Santa Cruz, and there are three
CoHousing groups now in the planning stages.
- Santa
Cruz CoHousing (sccohousing@yahoogroups.com) - A group in Santa Cruz
is working to establish a new cohousing community. We are investigating
land-purchase options, which could involve building from scratch or
retrofitting existing structures. During development, individuals will
be financially protected by the formation of a Limited Liability Company.
We intend to use design and construction methods that will maximize
affordability. Santa Cruz Cohousing holds orientations on the third
Sunday of the month at 1:00 PM, usually at Louden Nelson Community Center
(301 Center Street, Santa Cruz). Call to confirm location. Once you
have attended an orientation, you can begin attending the business meetings.
Child care is available upon request. For more information contact:

-
Sierra CoHousing - newest kid on the block, hoping for a large site
with large organic garden as well as approx. 20 homes and intergenerational,
child-friendly, ecological philosophy.(cohousing@cichlid.com)
-
Vegan Cohousing - By vegan we mean, meat, dairy and egg free.We are in
the final stages of our site selection. We have been looking at properties,
meeting with mortgage brokers and researching LLC's. A large part of
our mortgage has been approved and we are now looking for one or two
more committed people to make this happen. Golden Dotter 831) 471-9100
