"To dismiss Mute Angst Envy is to dismiss the scarred tables of the Upstart Crow, the suburban boredom of the precosmopolitan San Jose, and a whole crowd of ridiculous drifters who, for better or worse, are making themselves immortal. There is nothing to regret. No apologies to the feeble minded. That is not what Mute Angst Envy is after all. Mute Angst Envy dreams of walking in a world without roads or maps. Mute Angst Envy sings of new will, a counter-current of hope for the hopeful, and a heart of the heartland.
Immortality: is that not what we are here for? To leave a mark on the world around us, to draw blood and scar the skin and make Feeling part of Forever. To remember all that we have forgotten.
I first saw Mute Angst Envy at One Step Beyond, back when we were new: I remember the smoke machine, everyone chainsmoking, and a mournful, descending, triumphant song called Quiet Moments.
The next few years would see many songs: songs of mourning, songs of prayer, songs that weave spells and songs that crush. But all Immortal -- and that's not bad for a bunch of quirky Doom addicts.
Seven years after the OSB show, I sit in the basement studios of Mute Angst Envy's downtown house of pain and remember what I started to forget and try to hammer it out onto ink and paper. I submit that some emotions are too huge to be felt an some windows too hazy to see through to the outside. I cannot remember what you have forgotten"
Mute Angst Envy was successful
as both performers and recording artists. The band performed at the top
clubs in the Bay Area. The Trust EP was first released in September
1990 following rotation of the song "Creep" on KITS
(105.3FM) in San Francisco. That EP was also a favorite on the play
lists of many college radio stations. In 1992, KITS rated "Creep" at number
150 of the top 300 modern rock songs of all time.
The Archetype/Trust CD, released in April 1992, charted on college stations around the country and was distributed internationally. Mute Angst Envy supported this album with many headlining shows, as well as supporting touring acts such as Xymox and Wolfgang Press.
Mute Angst Envy is currently recording a new EP, its first in many years! Members of MAE can be seen and heard in Luxo Crush and Lisa Dewey & the Lotus Life.
