What is Acupunture?

Acupuncture is an ancient medicine that dates back 4-5 thousand years in China. Aupuncture deals with balance and nature. The idea of health in the acupuncture model is to return the body to balance. Balance in this case means the balance of the Qi or Chi (life energy) in your body. The popular words “yin and yang” refer to this balance. When the yin and yang are in balance good health will be the result. Qi is the rush or tingle that runs up your back, when the Qi is stuck or blocked the blocked system will suffer and a condition of “dis”-ease will result. Acupuncture treats from the outside in and Chinese herbal therapy treats disease from the inside out. The mixture of this time proven system of health care produces great and safe results.

What education is required to practice acupuncture?

Acupuncturist graduation requires a master’s degree in traditional Chinese medicine. (TCM) Basic life sciences are also required including, coursework in anatomy, physical and laboratory diagnostics, physiology, pathology, nutrition, and public health. A huge part of Chinese medicine is the belief that the person being treated knows what is going on with their body and our job is to help that person learn how to return to health and balance.

This education means that a licensed acupuncturist has the expertise to diagnose, treat, and/or manage many different health problems.

What is an Acupuncture treatment like?

I use the finest quality needles that are as thin as a hair. The needles are used only once and are pre-packaged and sterile. A treatment starts with the taking of the pulse and looking at the tongue, the tongue and pulse provide an acupuncturist with important information about your present situation and health. After taking the pulse and looking at the tongue a history of your current situation will be taken. Then a treatment will be formulated at which point needles will be placed into certain acupuncture points on the meridians and points on the ears and scalp may also be used. Some people report strong feeling of Qi moving around their body while others do not. Every person is unique and his or her experience is true for him or her. After the insertion of needles, the patient will be left to relax for 30 minutes or so to “let the needles work”. After a treatment you might feel full of energy or tied or just normal, in any case it’s right for you. I will often prescribe an herbal formula to work in conjunction with the acupuncture, the herbal treatment allows the healing to continue and be strengthened between appointments.

Your progress

You progress will be monitored carefully to ensure that we are on the right track to proving you with the best possible treatment. The subjective improvement as well as the objective findings will be noted, and your treatment plan will be modified to meet your changing condition. Communication between your acupuncturist and other health care providers will be encouraged for your benefit.
