To Err is Human. (2014) Latin aphorism. 5 ¾ by 6 5/8 by 1 1/4. The book features a double nested accordion structure created using various sheets of Peter's handmade paper. Peter made the paper, printed the pages and did the binding. One sheet of paper is illustrated with a paper pulp pochior-like illustration of machinery, the thing in Peter's life that leaves the least tolerance for error. The text is letterpress printed using wood and metal type in multiple color runs. Made by Peter Thomas who, influenced by his mentor William Everson, strives for perfection in his printing but continually fails. The book is a typographic exploration of the aphorism: The label on the slip case is printed, "To Err is Human." The title on the front cover of the book is "To Air is Human." The printed page of text has the words "Errare est Humanum" printed over "To error is human," "To air is human," and "Ad spiritum est humiliato." The book has a cloth and handmade paper covered slipcase. There are 5 copies. $695. One copy left 4/21 returned from Triennial.
